Observations and Promotion
Ok, so I'm going through some other cooperative conworld projects to get an idea how others have done it. First, there seems to be three major groups of collaborative projects: Geo/biological conworld - detail oriented conworlding that focuses on the planet rather than any civilization Cultural Conworld - Focus is on the development (and interaction) of different cultures Linguistic conworld - Focus is put on the languages with the planet and cultural merely providing a canvas to paint on. There also seems to be a few way to organize the collaboration: All-for-One - Everyone discusses everything that is up for creation using endless threads about minutiae Theory Division - One person is assigned one "science" (tectonics, botany, marine fauna, magic, etc) and discussions are used to stitch personal decisions together Location Division - Each player develops his own geographic location and decisions are transitioned across "foggy" areas. --- As far as I can see, we seem to have (not counting the separate conlanging project) a Cultural Conworld with Locational division. I may be wrong (or just of a differing POV than others). Is anyone here also involved (or just trolling) some of these projects, like Kutjaraworld, Zebia, or Kecaena? While only a couple have ten or more people, most are about our size, well, our listed size (only 1/2 the people are really active). Can we maybe draw some people over? I saw that Jashan from Zebbe was put off by most of the other projects... The territories idea is only supposed to be temporary. With the area/pixel size determined, no empire could last for long. If we don't grow, the world might have to shrink... I would agree with the cultural/locational analysis. I do say we should get more people involved. I'm not really on any other boards (except Omniglot, and that really doesn't help), so I couldn't do much, but it'd be great if we could attract more. If we have to shrink the world, we can just change the diameter, increase our borders, and recalculate areas. Cultural Conworld - Focus is on the development (and interaction) of different cultures Linguistic conworld - Focus is put on the languages with the planet and cultural merely providing a canvas to paint on. There also seems to be a few way to organize the collaboration: All-for-One - Everyone discusses everything that is up for creation using endless threads about minutiae Location Division - Each player develops his own geographic location and decisions are transitioned across "foggy" areas. A combonation of these is how I think this should work.

Hey, we've started moving again (yay). And since we're finally getting some things which I can compare, I will, in this little descriptive game (feel free to join). List some things that describe how you see the other cultures, as well as your own. It could be interesting to find out how others are viewing you as well as how the cultural differences mesh. From what I've seen, I'd describe the three major cultures like this: Tamega: durable, solid, earthy, "dwarfy" Raitolia: artistic, progressive, airy, "elfy" Tekann: practical, adaptable

Tolkien_Freak- 08-10-2007

The 'elfy' thing was what I was going for. I don't have much to add to yours.

Tamega: durable, solid, earthy, "dwarfy" I am truly insulted.  i r no tolkkinite

fmra- 08-10-2007

I'm not saying you are one, or that the Tamega are dwarves, they just seem to have the gruff, stoic, permanently rooted attitudes/tastes of the architypical fantasy dwarf. No insult meant, I just couldn't find other ways to describe them in short terms. And I'm no huge follower of Tolkien either. I didn't know TF was shooting for an elvish motif, I just kinda saw one. I'm pretty sure you weren't trying, but it was a way to describe them simply. I'm sorry if I offended. I was hoping to use this as a feedback mechanism to see how what we have so far is viewed by everyone else. As far as my con-cultural view, TF's Raitolians are inventive and clever, but a little unfocused, possibley shallow, and vain. Doesn't mean that they are, but that's how the Tekann would prolly see them at this point. The Tamega are more threatening with their internal unstability and impressive in their substantial creations. The Tekann would definitely respect them to their face while trying to figure out how to keep them occupied and far away from the Tekann's interest. The Tekann are not overly fearful, nor frivolous in dealing with each, but the differences they (I) have seen in each begins to form opinions of each.

No insult meant, I just couldn't find other ways to describe them in short terms. I understand, I've run into this before, and I am no stranger to comparisons, it's just that when being compared to Tolkien, I get a bit defensive. I'm sorry if I offended. I was mostly jokin'. I was hoping to use this as a feedback mechanism to see how what we have so far is viewed by everyone else. I empathize with your desire for feedback, but I think for the time being there are only 3 of us fully invested in this project. My take on this whole thing is; keep working, keep creating and let the chips fall where they may.

I understand, I've run into this before, and I am no stranger to comparisons, it's just that when being compared to Tolkien, I get a bit defensive. I would argue that I wasn't even thinking Tolkien when I wrote that, but seriously, every fantasy humanoid since has been more or less derivitive. ;)

Sano- 08-13-2007

I would argue that I wasn't even thinking Tolkien when I wrote that, but seriously, every fantasy humanoid since has been more or less derivative. Um, not entirely...elves, dwarves, goblins and hobbits were around long before Tolkien.

Tolkien_Freak- 08-13-2007

He said since, not ever. Anyway, can we get back on topic?

Sano- 08-13-2007

He said since, not ever. Right, which is a temporal distinction that I emphasized, not argued against. Anyway, can we get back on topic? Well, the thread title is "Observations and Promotion", and this discussion came out of fmra expressing his observations about the people of this conworld, so I'd say we're right on track.

Ok, so its totally unlike me to fall for advertisements, especially google ads, but Saturday I looked at the wiki building site (wetpaint) that is sometimes listed near the top of the forum. So far I've had a good time transferring and organizing the data on Tekann that is spread around here everywhere into a more easily referenced format. Not much of the text is new (mostly cut and paste) though I did do some to make it flow better. I'm not advocating the project be moved to a wiki, which I think would make it harder play. I'm just putting things in order so that myself (and maybe others) can have a quick reference guide to the Tekann. Anyway, here it is so far: http://tekann.wetpaint.com/ Note the standard and shameless advertisement for the Savukk Project at the bottom of the home page... :)

Tolkien_Freak- 09-10-2007

That looks good. I personally would have used Wikia, just because I'm used to Wikipedia, but I like the feel of that site.

I'm not a big fan of black backgrounds, but it's a nice website.

So... Do we have any idea what the criteria are for setting this thing in motion - a date, a mandatory level of country information, what?

Sano- 10-25-2007

So... Do we have any idea what the criteria are for setting this thing in motion - a date, a mandatory level of country information, what? From what I can tell, there is no 'motion'. As far as a 'mandatory level of country information', I'm not sure imposing regulations is going to entice any additional participants, nor will it inspire or motivate the current ones. I'm very confused why people think this needs to start...from my perspective, it's never been a game, or RPG, just a collaborative project to try and make a well fleshed out conworld.
